A dog’s sniffer can be incredibly useful especially in times of distress. And the sniffer of this one pup named Jedi is definitely what saved 7-year-old Luke who suffers from Type 1 Diabetes.
You see, Luke was sound asleep in his room when his blood sugar level suddenly dropped to an alarmingly low rate. Although the child’s glucose monitor wasn’t going off, Jedi knew this was happening based on his sense of smell.
Out of concern for the boy’s life, Jedi took matters into his own paws and quickly ran to the room of the boy’s parents. Dorrie, Luke’s mother, was also sleeping when Jedi came rushing into the room. The pup was jumping up and down excitedly so the child’s mother could wake up and sense what was going on.
Initially, Dorrie didn’t know what Jedi was trying to point out because she thought Luke’s glucose monitor was working perfectly. There were no beeping sounds to alert her that the child’s blood sugar levels were dropping, so she decided to hop back into her bed.
But Jedi wasn’t going to let Dorrie fall back into slumber because he knew that the situation could worsen as every second passed. The dog kept on jumping until Dorrie got out of bed and eventually led her to Luke’s room for the second time.
There, Dorrie knew that something was troubling the pup so she decided to manually test Luke’s blood sugar level. To her surprise, it was at a 57 which was considerably lower than the normal blood sugar level of 70 for the child.
Now that she knew Luke had his blood sugar levels dropping, she knew she had to give him a glucose tablet. Without Jedi’s instincts, the child might have suffered a terrible fate.
