Some shocking news was released Tuesday regarding a popular pet product that has made thousand of pets sick. Some have even died!
So far, there have been 1,698 pet deaths, according to an investigative report that was published Tuesday, March 2, 2021, by USA Today and the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting.
Additionally, humans who came in contact with the collar also experienced reactions was also reported on nearly 1,000 incidents from this pet product.
The pet product in question is the Seresto flea and tick collar manufactured by Elenco and developed by Bayer.
In a disturbing twist, critics blame the Environmental Protection Agency for turning a blind eye to the problem.
According to public records, over 75,000 incident reports were received by the EPA regarding the Seresto pet collars since 2012.
The EPA’s responsibility includes regulating products that contain pesticides.
“After seven years of an increasing number of incidents, they are telling the public that they are continuing to monitor the situation,” Karen McCormack, a former EPA official, said of the agency, according to the report. “But I think this is a significant problem that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.” source
The Seresto flea and tick collar release small amounts of pesticide onto the animal for months at a time. The pesticide kills fleas, ticks, and other pests. It was touted as being safe for cats and dogs.
The Seresto flea collar has been the top seller on Amazon despite approximately 5,000 reviews complaining of skin irritations.
Former EPA official Karen McCormack added, “Seresto has the most incidents of any pesticide pet product” she’s ever seen.
The EPA stated that no pesticides are without harm potential, and the two pesticides in Seresto are allowable based on the best science and incident data available.
