Swampy, the dog, is trying to get lucky by finding his permanent home by St. Patrick’s Day. The 15-year-old bully breed mix recently dressed to impress when he donned a green leprechaun-inspired costume to celebrate the holiday and add flair and flavor for his adoption listing. The all-green-wearing “southern gentleman” cutie is also about to reach his golden time at the end of the rainbow, so he must find a family soon.
The dashing darling currently resides in Lacombe, Louisiana, at the St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter, where he is patiently waiting for a family who could take him in forever.
He was named appropriately for the ‘swampy’ bayou where he was born and raised in. Despite the lucky connotation that his outfit suggests, this canine has never been more down on his luck as he lost his home not once but twice.
According to his biography, his former owner passed on a few months back, leaving him alone and orphaned. There had been a kind and homeless individual who looked after him, but he also had to give him up. Despite these, Swampy loved both of them unconditionally—even though they left him with nothing through no fault of his.
He is also looking for a kind, warm home with someone he can love. His bio further states that he loves spending his days sleeping quietly on the bed allotted for his kennel run and would adore a fluffy red blanket in his new home. He would also prefer it if he could be the only dog inside the house. The shelter also mentions that he is without heartworms, has a microchip, is neutered, and is updated with his vaccines.
In addition to his stellar resume, Swampy also enjoys going for slow walks, does well on a leash, and will be there by your side wherever you go. He also approaches you when he’s called and likes walking beside his human companion even though he’s off the leash in their meet-and-greet yard. Good ol’ Swampy is also housetrained and knows basic commands such as ‘sit’—although it is a bit of a challenge to get his butt on the ground and a little longer to get up again.
And to help address Swampy’s sincere wish to land a home, Mardi Paws tied up with Baldwin Subaru to feature various harder-to-adopt canines weekly through the shelter’s website they can help them find loving homes.
In a statement, the organization mentioned that their motivation came from how the pandemic continues to throw animal shelters into a curve with limited adoption appointments and restricted off-site events. They said that there are three ways that animals could get out of a shelter: through adoption, transport, or euthanasia—with emphasis that they refuse for the third option from happening.
Aside from the 50% discount on adoption fees that they are offering until this month, each adopter has the chance to receive a green-colored ‘Lucky Charm’ pet bandana, together with a tote bag containing a feeding bowl, toys, and other treats.
